This time it’s an ‘04 SL600 for $9000. Suspension is past knackered, but I wager it could use a little love. Updated with extra photo and start-up vid.

You should get it and just replace the ABC system with accuair or something.

My 2004 ABC equipped Benz is about $1/mile in maintenance. Fuck ABC.

How the S600 with the lower mileage and less questionable history has the higher problem frequency still escapes me.

A company called VVK out of Florida has an awesome kit for R230s that includes 30-way coilovers, a special power steering pump and special adjustable sway bars. Then it’s just a matter of coding out the ABC system using STAR/DAS Developer and voila! Granted, it’s a little on the pricey side ($4k for the suspension kit plus whatever it costs to have the ABC “faults” coded out) but it’s cheaper than maintaining the ABC system. Last I heard, they’re almost done working out the kinks for the V12 cars.

Update: A little more research shows that they now have a front sway bar that’s compatible with the V12s and they’ve also figured out a solution for power steering.

Oh, it hasn’t broken down in well over a year now. I’ve just put a lot of money into it and don’t really drive it that much. Since I bought it four years ago I’ve only put 24000 miles or so on it. In reality the cost is closer to 85¢ per mile. I anticipate it’ll need valve block work this spring, but other than that it’s pretty well sorted currently. When I hit that tire this summer I got all of the motor and transmission mounts replaced under insurance, along with the oil cooler, intercooler, radiator, and all the related lines up there. Next thing I figure it’ll need is the rear valve block, but I’ll have both done at the same time so I don’t have to pay for a swimming pools’ worth of pentosin.

That’s really interesting actually, I hadn’t heard about them. Do you know if they have anything similar for W220?

Sadly they don’t make anything for the W220.

How much was the charge for the motor/trans mounts...I think I need mine done and I understand it can either be horrifically expensive or peanuts depending on what part number your current mounts are.
